DJ Spoony Meets...an original 6-part documentary
series for BBC Radio 5 Live
produced by Pete Gibbons of Somethin Else
Transmission Times: 9.30pm, Tuesdays 5th, 12th,
19th, 26th June, and 3rd, 10th July 2001
Somethin Else, the UKs leading independent radio production company,
presents a six-part documentary series (30 mins each) for Radio 5 Live,
DJ Spoony Meets. Spoony is already known to radio listeners as a crucial
member of Radio 1s infamous DJ trio the Dreem Teem, but as a huge footie
fan he'll be using his own inimitable up-close and personal style to interview
some of the biggest names in British football. So, to find out what really
makes the Premiership's glamour kids tick when they're off the pitch or
on the bench, tune in for some major league revelations starting Tuesday
5th June at 9.30pm.
Guests getting comfy on the couch, plucky with the PlayStation, and meaningful
on music with Spoony, will be Leeds Rio Ferdinand
(5th June), Chelseas Jody Morris (12th June), Newcastles Kieron Dyer (19th
June), Liverpools Jamie Redknapp (26th June), Chelseas Eidur Gudjohnsen
(3rd July) and Liverpools Emile Heskey (10th July). These
young stars are enjoying their celebrity status with flash houses, cars
and girlfriends, not to mention their astronomical salaries, and Spoony
tackles the players head-on into disclosing what they really get up to
when the final whistle¹s blown. An entertaining and insightful look
into the real lives of this nation¹s sporting heroes, Spoony browses
through their wardrobes and flicks through their CD collections, often
encountering interior décor that would fall foul of any offside
rule!
A Liverpool fan himself, DJ Spoony has seen his broadcasting career rise
like Robbie Fowlers pay-packet since the days of hosting his own show
on pirate radio. With a seat on the bench presenting at Kiss 100 and then
Galaxy FM, the Dreem Teem then joined Radio 1 combining their innovative
DJing style with enthusiastic chat to entertain listeners and celebrities
alike. Spoony's TV career has also expanded just as rapidly with his own
series on Play UK (with his Teem mates), as well as regular programmes
for other terrestrial and satellite channels. You can also catch Spoony
over the summer from June 2nd presenting Soccer Am at Sky Sports.
So, as this years football season comes to an end, fill that nasty summer
break with DJ Spoony Meets... - definitely one fixture thats not to be
missed
The Radio 1 Dreem Teem Tour
The Dreem Teem take their show out on the road for the first
time as the Radio 1 Dreem Teem Tour hits the UK throughout June as part
of the station¹s summer of live music.
The garage trio - DJ Spoony, Mikee B and Timmi Magic kick off the tour
at Milk Bar Club in Belfast and then hit top venues in Manchester, Bournemouth
and Reading culminating on the Mediterranean clubbing island of Ayia Napa.
The UK leg of their tour will see the Dreem Teem play exclusive Saturday
night sets which will be broadcast on the following night in their specialist
show Dreem Teem Presents (01.00am-04.00am). The morning after the boys
will be up and ready to present their regular Sunday show from a local
bar with live PA sets and special guests, making full use of their regular
Hangover Cure feature.
The Dreem Teem made their station debut back in January 2000 and have
wasted no time gaining a big following by playing a wide range of R¹n¹B,
soul and hip-hop as well as UK garage for which they are best known -
in fact, anythang with a groove - mixed in with their own brand of style
and humour.
"We cant wait to get out of the studio and on the road. It will
give us a chance to meet our listeners and give us a Sunday morning lie-in
for a change as we wont have to leg it back to London from clubs around
the UK." said Mikee B.

Backroom
Records:
Backroom Records are now distributed worldwide,
exclusively by Unique Distribution. The first release to be distributed
by them will be Paul Reset "Self Sufficient", due for release on June
18th. "Self Sufficient" is Paul's first foray into breaks production,
straying from his home ground of Drum & Bass. The release features the
original - a twisted dark sounding, 2-steppesque breaker - and two remixes.
The first remix is courtesy of Dubwise Selective aka Ian Sheppard and
Gavin James. They've turned the track into a dance floor smasher with
more than a nod to the ol' Hardcore sounds we all know and love! The last
remix comes courtesy of Boombox Records' Stabilizer. This a peak time,
mainroom monster is sure to appeal to all and sundry from the breaks to
progressive jocks. It's huge! After that, we'll be releasing the second
Backroom twelve from label boss Ian Davy. A two tracker, plus remixes,
sees two sides of Ian's DJ'ing influences. "Battle", a funky basslined
track with bouncy, almost UK garage like breaks and freestyle vocals will
appeal to many floors whilst "Overdrive" will appeal to harder ones! A
distorted guitar loop provides not only the rhythm of the track, but also
the bad-assed bassline. Two "Battle" remixes complete the package from
Swiss based Be&See (an absolute blinder of a mix) and G15, who turn in
a laidback lounge version. Release date around mid-July. You'll be able
to listen to all the new releases and remixes on the website, when we
relaunch and revamp it in the next few weeks. These include those from
new signings: B-Side and Contax aswell as a new one from Backroom stalwart
Hoista! More on those soon...

I am a youth worker and run a youth cafe called Diversions in the London
Borough of Sutton. We work with a range of young people from a wide area.
The cafe has just started a big advertisement campaign to get more customers
and we are fighting to keep it open. The Cafe is struggling to make any
profit at all and we have no money to buy new records. We have our own
decks but the young people who want to use them won't bring their own
for fears that they will be stolen on the way. The music we have is what
attracts the young people to the cafe. If they didn't come to the cafe
they hang around causing trouble and so it is vital we offer an alternative.
I am writing this email to ask if we could possibly be able to get some
records sent to us for free for the young people to use and practice with.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Many Thanks Tim Wallder Diversionscafe1@aol.com

Hot New Track.
Bad 2 Da Bone Feat. Juice Man Party Sacred Records UK. Bad 2 Da Bone originally
formed in 1998 with the two founder members, Billy April and Trevor Moses
with new addition Steve Graham this year. This record is a funky orientated
UK Garage track, with a clear, crisp melody running throughout, alongside
careful drums and beats. The lovely melody is complimented further with
additional vocals of Sharmaine Campbell, which adds a soulful feeling
to it. The vocals of Juice Man then make it a catchy club groove to drop
at peak time. There's 3 mixes on this vinyl to choose from, with the David
Howard Club Mix the one to go for, but there's a more bubbling underground
mix on the flip from Para & Dj Rascal. Out April 30th 2001. Review by
Greg Zizique.

The Luck and Neat magic keeps on working. DJ Luck and MC Neat
have proved they are not one-hit-wonders by delivering a succession of
UK garage dancefloor gems. Piano Loco is their new release and one I originally
wasn't keen on. But it grows. The keyboard stabs and Neat's infectious
effortless delivery quickly win over the fiercest opponents. Check out

Todd Edwards on the mix of Benjamin Diamond "Little Scare".
Benjamin Diamond the voice behind Stardust and a few other well recieved
mirror ball gems, is back with an extremely pleasant effort. Now the track
plays very well and will be popular on the crossover dance floors, but
theres' more. Todd Edwards has delivered his best mix of the year (yes
even better than Shut the Door) for those who require a different
groove. A massive mix and another top of the DJ search list. You need
this one, and need it now !!!! (CW)
